Anyone who enjoyed James Fox’s novel “White Mischief” about British Expats in Kenya

will enjoy this too.....................

Taking the Gap is a fast-paced exciting African thriller that kept me turning pages long past my bed-time. You can almost smell dust and sweat and feel insect bites in this book. Anyone who enjoyed James Fox’s novel “White Mischief” about British Expats in Kenya will love this parallel tale about post WWII settlers further south in Rhodesia. It is an evocative fictional read that conjures the sights and aromas of Southern Africa, the races that occupied it and their strange behaviors during a period of rapid chaotic transition between 1960 and 1980. It brings to life average people sucked into a conflict that nearly caused the British Army to mutiny and the British Government to fall. I was really sorry to turn the last page

Enjoyed all three in the Trilogy. Even though it took me several years to get through them. Not that they were hard to read! On the contrary. Actually a really enjoyable romp through pages and pages of adventure ringed with technicalities on flying and mountaineering with a smattering of Porn.

Enjoyed the book and look forward to the next two in the trilogy. A number of spelling and graphical errors meant not giving the fifth star

A naturally gifted writer whose characters take on a credibility of their own. The authors captivating pace and descriptive powers along with his sense of humour, make this a hugely enjoyable read and remind me what company and pleasure can be derived from an engaging book

I enjoyed the read but found the references to sex not really applicable.
Obviously written by one who was there but with some added and possibly fabricated stories to add spice to it

The book is written by a born story teller. It’s a thriller set in contemporary Zimbabwe and surrounding countries as well as further away: Libya and UK. The leading character is a pilot who has security and a reasonable standard of living away from Zimbabwe but is drawn back to the land of his upbringing by a love of the country and its people. The politics of Zimbabwe are highlighted and the suffering of the poor Africans is a concern.
The story moves at a cracking pace; the plotting is good. One keeps turning the pages with anticipation; plenty of surprises come off well and to the end one is not sure how things will turn out. The language is good: spare and purposeful; there is a general absence of cliché and overblown metaphors. Places in Libya and Botswana are brought vividly to life. There is a clarity that is film like in most of the sections, especially the ones in Libya.
